Playing tips
In brief
In rummy, you win by making your initial meld early and keeping your hand’s value low. The guidelines below are players’ habits, not rules: depending on the cards, the opposite choice may be best.
Prepare your initial meld
- In Rami 51, first look for a pure three-card run: without it, even a hand full of face cards is stuck.
- Face cards and high Aces quickly raise the total; keep them until you have made your initial meld.
- Several small melds add together: you do not need a single long run.
Use the joker well
- A joker left in your hand costs 20 points at the end of the round: do not hold on to it too long.
- Placed in the middle of a run, it can represent only one specific card: an opponent who has already made their initial meld and holds that card can reclaim it.
Keep your hand’s value low
- Once you have made your initial meld, prioritize discarding high-value, isolated cards: face cards, Aces, and an unusable joker.
- Keep other players’ melds in mind: a card you cannot meld can often be added to their runs.
Read the discard pile
- What your opponent picks up from the discard pile reveals what they are building; avoid giving them the next card in their run.
- What they discard, on the other hand, reveals what they do not need.
